People are obsessed with the Future, technological devices, predicting that next generations will be somehow "living in 3D". We come at a very stage where everything has to be in 3D to get this modern era touch: garments, movies, arts... Actually, we cannot deny there is a major step forward, but there has to be a balance between what is really necessary and what is not. Don't think about what is trendy, like shooting a 3D film just for mercantile reasons. What is the point of using this technology when it is not really effective on the screen? Perhaps it is the wrong direction ("the majority is always wrong, right?"): always expect the unexpected and the future is actually unwritten. But what about the future in two dimensions like at Comme des Garçons AW2012 ? What if accessories like bags can be as flat as Kawakubo's collection, as if they had been cut out from paper?
Literally Jump From Paper is actually designing accessories that come out of the paper, a dreamy and fun approach of creation, as a future life in cartoon motion. Chai Su and Rinka Lin, the two Taipei based designers, definitely embrace this outside of the box aesthetics, full of imaginations, let-go and fun, that we get when you take a look at the two lines: the original and the limited collections. The two lines are about uniqueness, inventiveness and somehow happiness. It is about showing your personality, having fun with the whole range of different pieces they offer. As they said : "life does not need to be so serious, people are born to have fun, life is too short to go around being boring everyday!"
Their Original line is actually not so basic just like their Time Machine limited line is pushing the boundaries, exploring the 50's without being cliché. It is sophisticated without being too much and it is also classic without being too vintage. It is a bit confusing, but in a good way. There is always the non-boring hint in each bag because of the brilliant idea of the unique 2D shape. Just wondering at the first glance if it is a real bag or just a toy? Just like watching the Magritte painting Ceci n'est pas une pipe, just feeling the same impression, wondering if it is a real bag or the representation of a bag on the paper! ! We were dazed and confused. And Lord knows how much we love to be dazed and confused by Fashion! About that, here is what the designers said: "Jump From Paper's unusual and funky exterior confuses and pleases people, while at the same time its inner advocates an outside-the-box, imagination has-no-boundaries philosophy".
