THE EMERGENCE OF THE SUBURBAN BOYS

This is Paris Fashion Week, we don't need to tell you, here are presented the most prestigious maisons de couture and we have already spotted some incredible collections such as Dries Van Noten who, never looks backwards but instead keeps repeating to himself that the best is always to come and who delivered a masterpiece collection with boyish looks and 2D prints vs 3D flowers or Alexander Wang for Balenciaga who also presented a collection with no inhibitions, taking for himself the codes of the famous fashion house by writing his own story for Balenciaga (at last, Nicolas Ghesquière's heavy ghost seems far away!) and as he said to WWD about this latest AW14 collection he wanted to "introduce a knitwear vocabulary to Balenciaga". Today, another designer who re-created a quintessential atmosphere from the 90s who was lacking on the catwalks: Girls with Attitude! We have no doubt that on Olivier Rousteing's moodboard the word was BITCH with strong extravagant body-conscious looks. Hyper sophisticated (almost couture) pencil skirts reminding us of Alaïa's signature.

Ok, in Paris there are all those great, gigantic fashion shows but there are also young designers who deserve to be under the spotlights and who are the Ones to Watch such as Benjamin Bertram who presented at the latest Who's Next his collection Suburban Boys which attract the attention of fashion media. We had already a crush on him when we discovered him on the website Not Just A Label and more particularly when we saw his gorgeous cropped neoprene sweaters. He graduated in 2012 at Sheffield Hallam University with a first class BA Hons Fashion Design Degree. It was very important for us to talk about him because his SS14 collection Logans Run re-editing some pieces of his graduate collection is about to be available in selected stores such as The Unconventional who always has the guts to support young talents.

His aesthetic can be defined by such words as Boldness, Avant Garde and Minimalism and he always tries to look for a sharp tailoring. The Bertram look is composed of a structured, cropped white jacket worn over a black polo neck that you match with some loose cropped pants. This is what we definitely love with Benjamin Bertram, this less is more attitude where all his pieces speak for themselves. These pieces are often black, a colour that can seem easy but with the designer, we can see something new and something daring in this colour. Benjamin Bertram creates collections for boys (and girls) who have no limits and who fear nothing! Boys (and girls) with no inhibitions! All his jackets and tops are musthaves and more especially those worn in the video made for Suburban Boys. While watching this short movie we were like on drugs so beware his garments can create a nice addiction! So keep in mind his name because his look will make it to the streets soon!

AU REVOIR SIMONE - FEBRUARY 2014

Here are some of the pictures we took during the Au Revoir Simone's concert, a band we have loved for several years now and that has never disappointed us. Ok, their style has evolved but they have always suceeded in reinventing themselves without betraying their sound characterized by synthesizers and beatbox. This live was full of emotions, dance, smiles, electropop, softness, energy. We already had no doubt about it but after this show, we can say that these three girls are definitely cool, the kind of girls you wanna be friend with.

PRADA GOT TRASH!

Miuccia's Act two (Act one was the men's collection) quoted  Fassbinder's The Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant, a huis clos about a love triangle between three women. About her collection, she said: "it's a mix of the sophisticated and things that look plain vulgar." You shake all these references and you have an irreverent, bold and avant-garde collection gathering Miuccia's current obsessions about beauty, gender and probably her aesthetic signature of good and bad taste. Other references were less obvious, but sex was definitely around the corner in a subtle way. It was not body-conscious literal attitudes, but kept and retained looks in which the body was hidden behind large v-neck sweaters, sherling jackets and boyish blazers. No tits or skin were showed. You could only see legs. You have to imagine the naked body behind the sheer négligés. The irony is that you become a kind of voyeur, detailing every layered look. There were college boy blazers over sheer dresses, colourful oversized sherling jackets with sheep skin on the wrong side over pop silk shirt dresses, the signature 70's printed dresses, outrageous sheer dresses embellished with strand of hairs over heavy v-neck sweaters or just these sweaters worn like dresses, the furry hairy red dress and stand out bondage dresses, all styled with ties fastened around the neck. There were also nude lips vs red lips as everything should not be conventional. It was raw, brutal, CharlieMinduesque, monstrous and kitsch considering these two ugly hairy looks : the red dress and the long v-neck sweater. This collection pushed the limits of ugly chic very far and that's funny from a luxury house. The power of Prada is Miuccia who is afraid of nothing, completely free to create what she wants. Hair is nothing but a piece of fabric for a house that established ugly as a trademark. No matter what is the commercial aspect of this collection, if Prada got trash the customers will follow.

HERO OF THE WEEK: OWLLE

Ok, we have to admit that until two days ago, we did not know much about Owlle. Of course, we had already heard her name and knew that she had been on the cover of Modzik, a French magazine about Fashion and Music but that was all! The Au Revoir Simone live (stay tuned for an article about this concert very soon) where she was the opening act was thus the perfect occasion to get to know this artist who is really worth knowing not only for her powerful and crystalline voice but also for her attraction to Fashion. Artists with a deep connection to fashion and clothes are often so inspiring! In a recent interview for Flare, she said: "I've always been inspired by fashion designers. Fashion and style are key components of what I try to achieve artistically". This strong attachment (she has already worked with Jean Paul Lespagnard, Carven or Maison Martin Margiela) could even be felt on the scene where she was wearing a rather sophisticated Jean Charles de Castelbajac gold lamé top (one of the big trends of the season!) with printed leggings and sneakers giving us the impression that we were watching a kind of Queen of the Night/Party Girl singing songs that made us wanna dance but at the same time that went deep into our heavy little hearts.

Here are some of the pictures we took during her performance at le 106.

Her brand new video for her single Don't Lose It from her album France.
